Ministry of the word by William Taylor (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Lecture IV (The theme and range of the pulpit).
In Lecture IV Taylor teaches us about the theme and range of the pulpit.
The theme of the pulpit should be the gospel, which includes teaching doctrine and the principles of love and righteousness as the two great elements of the power of the cross.
As for the the range of the pulpit, it should be both to non-Christians and Christians.
Taylor made an excellent point about the need to preach to both Christians and non-Christians: 'Judging from my own experience, you will be most apt to set yourselves in the beginning of your career, to secure the conversion of sinners ; while, perhaps, as you advance in the work, you may be tempted to run into the other extreme, and preach only to those who are already in the Church. But in neither case will there be a "right division" of the word of truth ; and your aim ought to be, on every occasion, to give to each "his portion in season."'
We are called to minister to both the city of God and the city of man through our ministries.
