Precious remedies against Satan's devices - Brooks - XVIII - 5.4 & Appendix

Required reading
Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices by Thomas Brooks (available from Amazon or free on the internet, here for example) - Chapter 5, Section 4; Appendix, Section I, Device 1.

My notes and thoughts
Section IV Device: 'By drawing them to affect ignorance, and to neglect, slight, and despise the means of knowledge.'  Brooks is refuting the whole concept that ignorance is bliss.  It is far from bliss: 'Ignorance will end in vengeance.'

Appendix - Device 1: 'By suggesting to the soul the greatness and vileness of his sins.'  After making the case that God accepts the greatest of sinners, Brooks makes this stunning statement in Remedy 5: 'The dearer we pay for anything, the dearer that thing is to us.  Christ hath paid most, and prayed most, and sighed most, and wept most, and bled most for the greatest sinners, and therefore they are dearer to Christ than others that are less sinful.'  I'm not sure about this.  Brooks' Scriptural proof consists only of examples of bad characters who God loved, namely Mary Magdalene and Paul (he does mention Jacob and Rachel but that link is very tenuous).  I'd be interested to know what fellow readers think - make a comment in the comments section if you feel led.
