- Up to the paragraph that begins: 'Now as they were thus in their way there came one running to meet them and said, 'Gentlemen, and you of the weaker sort, if you love life, shift for yourselves, for the robbers are before you.'
My notes and thoughts
Today we meet Honest who the pilgrims find asleep below an oak tree. Then most of today's reading is taken up with Great-heart speaking about Mr Fearing and then Honest speaking about Mr Self-will.
Mr Fearing is an interesting character - someone who is so continually fearful about his salvation that all the other experiences that trouble other pilgrims are a walk in the park for him. Yet although the others don't fear as much for their salvation as Mr Fearing, they do admit having the same fear to a lesser extent, particularly at their conversion. One of the boys, James, then makes some excellent conclusions on the subject of fear: 'No fears, no grace, said James. Though there is not always grace where there is the fear of Hell; yet to be sure there is no grace where there is no fear of God.' Good to be reminded that the fear of God is of great value.
Now it's your turn
