Spiritual depression - Lloyd-Jones - X - Chapter 10

Required reading
Spiritual Depression by D. M. Lloyd-Jones (available from Amazon) - Read Chapter 10, 'Where is your faith?'.

My notes and thoughts
Now Lloyd-Jones looks at how the incident of Jesus calming the storm teaches us that spiritual depression is evidence of weak faith.  The reason Jesus rebuked the disciples by asking 'Where is your faith?' is because the Christian should not be agitated and to do so implies a lack of confidence in God.

The general principles that Lloyd-Jones draws out from this incident about faith is that:
(i) We undergo trials of our faith;
(ii) The character of faith is: (a) not a feeling; (b) not automatic; (c) an activity to be exercised;
(iii) We should value even the weakest faith.

Under point (ii)(c) that faith is an activity that needs to be exercised, Lloyd-Jones gives us three ways to exercise our faith:
(i) Don't be controlled by the situation;
(ii) Remind yourself of what you believe and what you know;
(iii) Apply your faith to the situation.

In our day where there is global panic about a number of issues such as global warming and the global financial crisis, there is a global trial of faith going on.  But if we believe in our God then our faith should tell us not to panic and remember that God is sovereign and working for our good.  Unfortunately our faith is often very weak.

Now it's your turn
