Christian's great interest - Guthrie - VIII - Part 2 continued

Required reading
The Christian's great interest by William Guthrie (available from Amazon or free on the internet, here for example) - Continue Part 2 by reading Chapter 3.

My summary
In Chapter Three Guthrie answers nine objections that people make as to why they cannot be saved:
(i) They are too base, worthless and weak;
(ii) They have are singularly sinful;
(iii) Their sins have aggravating circumstances beyond the same sins in others;
(iv) Their sins are unusual;
(v) They have committed the unforgiveable sin;
(vi) They lack power to believe;
(vii) They are unfruitful;
(viii) They are ignorant of how to believe;
(ix) They have doubts.

What grabbed me
There was a nice little section tucked away in the chapter on what is the unforgiveable sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.  Guthrie firstly shows us what it is not and then shows us what it is.  A good definition is given: 'It is not a simple act of transgression, but a combination of many mischievous things, involving soul and body ordinarily in guilt.  We thus describe it - It is a rejecting and opposing of the chief gospel truth, and way of salvation, made out particularly to a man by the Spirit of God, in the truth and good thereof; and that avowedly, freely, wilfully, maliciously, and despitefully, working hopeless fear.'

Next week's reading
Continue Part 2 by reading Chapter 4.
