George Whitefield - Philip - XVIII - Chapter 15
Required reading Life and times of George Whitefield by Robert Philip (available from Amazon or free on the internet, here for example) - Read Chapter 15 (Whitefield in Bermudas).
My summary Today's reading concerned Whitefield's visit to the Bermudas. Philip gives us a little background to the word done previously in the Bermudas and then an account directly from Whitefield's diary.
Whitefield preached a lot with great effect and was even given a large contribution to his orphanage.
The visit struck me as unusual in that there was no record of opposition which we tend to see in such much of his work. Similarly, Whitefield himself summed up his time with: 'I have been received in a manner I dared not expect; and have met with little, very little opposition indeed.'
What grabbed me After being so well received, Whitefield makes an interesting comment: 'Thanks be to God for so much favour! If his cause requires it, I shall have more. He knows my heart; I value the favour of man no further than as it makes room for the gospel, and gives me a larger scope to promote the glory of God.'
Whitefield's motive for winning the praise of man was only so that more praise would go to God. A great example for us all.
Next week's reading Read Chapter 16 (Whitefield ranging).
