Life and Diary of David Brainerd - Edwards - IV - Part 5

Required reading
Life and Diary of David Brainerd by Jonathan Edwards (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Part 5.

My summary
In Part 5 we read about Brainerd's work with the Indians.  At Kaunaumeek he lives initially in a wigwam but then has a house
.

Brainerd still seems to travel about a lot through this period and is eventually sent to the Delaware river in Pennyslvania.

Throughout his trips Brainerd is preaching but also feeling considerable fatigue and pain.  He also continues to reflect on his sinful state and unworthiness.

At the end of the section we see Brainerd pass the requirements for Presbyterian ordination and hear of his ordination service.

What grabbed me
I liked to hear about Brainerd's concern to make the most of his time: 'The next thirteen days he appears to have been continually in deep concern about the improvement of precious time; and there are many expressions of grief, that he improved time no better; such as, “Oh, what misery do I feel, when “my thoughts rove after vanity! I should be happy if always engaged for God! O wretched man that I am!” &c. Speaks of his being pained with a sense of his barrenness, perplexed with his wanderings, longing for deliverance from the being of sin, mourning that time passed away, and so little was done for God, &c.'

We get so little time here, we really have to make sure it not wasted in vain pursuits.

Next week's reading
