Practical Religion - Ryle - XVII - Chapter 16

Required reading
Practical Religion by JC Ryle (available from Amazon or free on the internet, here for example) - Read Chapter 16 (Heirs of God).

My summary
Now Ryle explains what it is to be an heir of God.

Firstly Ryle shows the relationship of all true Christians to God is that they are "sons of God" through Christ.

Secondly Ryle looks at the special evidences of this relationship. True Christians:
(i) are led by the Spirit;
(ii) have the Spirit of sonship;
(iii) have the testimony of the Spirit;
(iv) share in the sufferings of Christ.

Thirdly, we see the privileges of being an heir.  True Christians inherit:
(i) knowledge;
(ii) holiness;
(iii) rest;
(iv) service;
(v) satisfaction;
(vi) communion with the saints;
(vii) communion with Christ.

What grabbed me
I love to be reminded of the fact that I am called a son of God: 'I know of no greater and more wonderful word that could have been chosen. To be servants of God—to be subjects, soldiers, disciples, friends—all these are excellent titles; but to be the "sons" of God is even a more superior designation. The Scripture says, "A slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever." (John 8:35) To be a son of the rich and noble people in this world—to be the son of princes and kings of the earth—this is commonly considered a great temporary advantage and privilege. But to be a son of the King of kings, and Lord of lords—to be a son of the High and Holy One—who lives and dwells in eternity—this is something far greater. And yet this is the privilege of every true Christian.'

May we never cease to be amazed that we are called God's children and treated as such.
