Desiring God - Piper - IV - Chapter 3

Required reading
Desiring God by John Piper (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 3.

My summary
Today Piper discusses the subject of Christian worship.

Piper opens the subject with an exposition of Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4.  From the passage we see that true worship involves the living water (the Holy Spirit) and bread (doing God's will).

For the rest of the chapter Piper asserts that true worship is obedience to God that is enjoyed as an end in itself, not simply as a duty.

What grabbed me
Some good illustrations were given of what spontaneous affections look like.

This one is particularly relevant given that Christmas is just over a week away: 'When a little child on Christmas morning opens his first gift and finds his "most favoritest" rocket that he has wanted for months, he does not think, "Now to what end shall I feel happy and thankful?" We call a person an ingrate when words of gratitude are dutifully forced instead of coming spontaneously from the heart.'

If only our cold hearts experienced that kind of joy in God more often...

Next week's reading
Read Chapter 4.
