Tracts & Letters (Vol 1) - Calvin - XI - Paternal admonition

Required reading
Tracts and Letters (Volume 1) by John Calvin (Available from Amazon or free here).  Read 'A paternal admonition by the Roman Pontiff'.

My summary
Now we read a letter written not by Calvin, but by Pope Paul III to Emperor Charles V.

Basically the letter is an rebuke to the Emperor for calling a council without consulting the pope.  The emperor is warned again and again about the danger of a ruler interfering in religious matters.

What grabbed me
Interesting that there is hardly any discussion of Protestant theology or even a defence of the position of the papal office within the church.  Pope Paul III assumes his position is not to be disputed and simply gives warnings of what happens to those who transgress it.

Will be interesting to read Calvin's reply next week.

Next week's reading
Read 'Remarks on the letter of pope Paul III by John Calvin'.
