Life of John Knox - M'Crie - XI - Period 6 concluded

Required reading
The life of John Knox by Thomas M'Crie (Available from Amazon or free here)
- Conclude Period 6.

My summary
The saga of the Queen Mary's relations with Knox continues today.

Firstly the queen is offended by the reformers attempting to enforce laws prohibiting papal worship.  She tries to flatter them into submission and this appears to work, but Knox then disrupts it.

Knox also gets in hot water for preaching against the queen's marrying a papist.  Mary is deeply offended and even bursts into tears in front of Knox.

Next we read of false accusations being laid on Knox.  Firstly of being a 'whoremonger' and then of treason.  Both charges are dismissed.

What grabbed me
I loved seeing the personal evangelist in Knox.

He has just enraged the queen and is waiting outside for her to give her judgement.  He has ticked her off so badly that nearly all of his friends have abandoned him.  And what does he do?  Begins to witness: 'This apology inflamed the Queen still more: she ordered him immediately to leave her presence and wait the signification of her pleasure in the adjoining room. There he stood as "one whom men had never seen;" all his friends (Lord Ochiltree excepted) being afraid to shew him the smallest countenance. In this situation he addressed himself to the court-ladies, who sat in their richest dress in the chamber. "O fair ladies, how plesing war this lyfe of yours, if it sould ever abyde and then, in the end, that we might pas to hevin with all this gay gear!" Having engaged them in a conversation, he passed the time till Erskine came and informed him, that he was allowed to go home until her Majesty had taken further advice.'

If only we were all like Knox and made the most of every opportunity!

Next week's reading
Commence Period 7 by reading up to the paragraph beginning 'During the time that Knox was in England, that tragedy, so well known in Scottish history, was acted, which led to a complete revolution in the government of the kingdom...'.
