The Works Volume 1 by Richard Sibbes
We continue Sibbes exposition of Matthew 12:20: 'A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.'
In Chapters Five and Six we observe that grace is only a little at first and mingled with corruption.
Then in Chapter Seven we are taught that Christ will not quench the smoking flax because:
(i) this spark from heaven is his own;
(ii) it tendeth to the glory of his powerful grace in his children.
Then in Chapter Eight and Nine Sibbes encourages:
(i) ministers to be tender toward young believers;
(ii) governors to be tender to weak ones and private Christians.
Chapters Ten and Eleven gives us rules and signs of whether you are smoking flax which Christ will not quench.
Chapter Twelve gives us instructions on how to remove scruples that hinder comfort.
May that be me.
