Hints and helps in pastoral theology by William S Plumer (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapters 1 (Sources of information in pastoral theology) and 2 (The importance of the ministry).
Today we begin a new book on the ministry.
Firstly, in Chapter 1, Plumer tells us where we find information on pastoral theology:
(i) the Scriptures (particularly the pastoral epistles);
(ii) commentaries;
(iii) books on pastoral theology.
Secondly, in Chapter 2, we are taught about the importance of the ministry. We see:
(i) wrong views of the ministry;
(ii) that the names of ministers show the character of the office (men of God, angels, shepherds, bishops, watchmen, ambassadors);
(iii) the accounts of Scripture concerning the nature of the office;
(iv) the ministry should not be dispensed with;
(v) quotes from the 'best and wisest men' about the ministerial office.
Plumer is easy to read, much like Taylor.
I liked the reminder that God's ministers are called men of God: 'The names and titles given to God's ministers evince the high character of their office. They are about fifty times called men of God. This language is found in both Testaments. Others are men of war, men of the world, men of science, men of authority, fathers, or brethren ; but a minister of the Gospel is a man of God. His office is conferred by God. His work is in the things of God. For its success he is wholly dependent on the special blessing of God. Rightly performed, its duties directly advance the glory of God. '
What a weighty honour it is to be called a man of God!
