Log college - Alexander - VI - Chapter 8

Required reading
The log college by Archibald Alexander (Available from Amazon or free here)
- Read Chapter 8 (The New London School).

My summary
Last week we read about the College of New Jersey.  This week we read about another college, the New London School.

This college was established by the Synod of Philadelphia after the rupture which took place between the Synod and the Tennents over the Log College.

The New London college was begun with Dr Alison was appointed as the first teacher.  After its establishment there was also talk of sending young men for a short period to Yale College - here Alexander includes a section from a letter explaining the situation of the New London College to the Yale president.

However the school at New London did not last long and candidates were accustomed to resort to the New Jersey College.  Then Dr Alison departed from the New London school which appears to have been the death blow to the college.

The rest of the Chapter is a large extract from Alison's funeral sermon by John Ewing.

What grabbed me
A bit of a sad chapter to read about all the church infighting.

However, I enjoyed the eulogy of Dr Alison.  Particularly these sentences: 'For he often expressed his hopes in the mercy of God unto eternal life, and told me but a few days ago, 'that he had no doubt but that, according to the tenor of the gospel covenant, he would obtain the pardon of his sins through the great Redeemer of mankind, and enjoy an eternity of rest and glory in the presence of God.' It was this comfortable prospect that animated him to uncommon fidelity and industry in all the duties of life, and enabled him to bear the lingering dissolution of his body with patience and resignation, until he fell asleep in Jesus.'

The assurance we have of forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ is our animation in both life and death.

Next week's reading
