Hints and helps in pastoral theology - Plumer - X - Chapter 14

Required reading
Hints and helps in pastoral theology by William S Plumer (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 14 (The matter of preaching).

My summary
Now Plumer teaches about the matter of preaching.

Firstly Plumer tells us what we should not preach:
(i) heathen morality and pagan sentiments;
(ii) metaphysics;
(iii) politics;
(iv) fine spun theories of virtue and piety;
(v) human inventions;
(vi) dry, heartless orthodoxy;
(vii) doctrines of natural religion;
(viii) ourselves.

Secondly Plumer tells us what we should preach: the Word of God.  Particularly:
(i) the person, work, sufferings, offices and the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ;
(ii) the person, grace, work and power of God's Spirit;
(iii) faith and works in their due place;
(iv) the world to come.

What grabbed me
I enjoyed the encouragement to preach Christ: 'Both in our experience and in our preaching, it is easy to make too little of Christ Jesus. But who ever made too much of him ? Is he not the end of the law for righteousness ? Is he not the light of the world ? Is he not the way,the truth, and the life ? Is he not the Alpha and the Omega, the author and the finisher of salvation? Without him we can do nothing. He is the substance of all saving doctrine, the sole sacrifice for sins, the King of Zion, the good shepherd, the bishop of souls. He is all and in all. By him we live, by him we have good hope, by him we are conquerors, by him we shall reign in glory.'

No one can make too much of Christ!
