Death of death in the death of Christ - Owen - V - Chapters 1 & 2 of Book 2

Required reading
Death of death in the death of Christ by John Owen (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapters 1 and 2 of Book 2.

My summary
Today we read about the ends of the death of Christ.

In Chapter One, two ends of the death of Christ are affirmed:
(i) the supreme end - the glory of God;
(ii) the intermediate end - the bringing of us to God.

Then in Chapter Two Owen overturns some mistaken ends of the death of Christ:
(i) Christ's own good;
(ii) the Father's own good.

What grabbed me
Owen's two chapters today might be seen as contradictory.  On the one hand he says that the end of the death of Christ is the glory of God.  But then he says that the death of Christ was not for God's good.

I think this sentence was key when Owen discussed the death not being for the good of the Father: 'I speak now of the proximate and immediate end and product of the death of Christ, not of the ultimate and remote, knowing that the supreme end of Christ’s oblation, and all the benefits purchased and procured by it, was “the praise of his glorious grace;” but for this other, it doth not directly tend to the obtaining of any thing unto God, but of all good things from God to us.'

The death of Christ did not add anything good to God, he is already infinitely good.  Rather the death of Christ was for the good of sinful humans.
