The Fundamentals - Torrey - LIV - Chapter 13 (The doctrines that must be emphasized in successful evangelism)

Required reading
The Fundamentals edited by R. A. Torrey (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 14 (Pastoral and personal evangelism).

My summary
This week Stone teaches us about evangelism.

Firstly he gives us some requisites to evangelism:
(i) the power of the Holy Spirit;
(ii) the word of God;
(iii) prayer.

Then Stone gives some advice on various methods and means that he has found useful for evangelism.

What grabbed me
I liked the first section, but some of Stone's methods in the second section were not wise.

For example: 'The Church of Christ universal has an immense force in herself to face the work of winning others to Christ, but we have not used that force. The foreign missionary lands have appreciated this fact in the work they are doing, and in some places the condition of winning others has been imposed upon new members before they are accepted into full communion. For instance, before a new member is received into the Korean Church, the convert must not only confess his faith in Christ, but also lead another to Christ.'

That's disgraceful.  An adulteration of the gospel.

It is in effect teaching that to be part of God's family you need to do at least one good work.

Next week's reading
Read Chapter 15 (The Sunday School's true evangelism).
