Christian's daily walk - Scudder - VII - Chapter 5 (Of the Lord's day) & Chapter 6 (Directions how to end the day)

Required reading
The Christian's daily walk, in holy security and peace by Henry Scudder (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 5 (Of the Lord's day) and Chapter 6 (Directions how to end the day with God).

My summary
Firstly this week we read a chapter on the Christian Sabbath.  Scudder speaks about:
(i) the Lord's day as a divine institution;
(ii) how to observe the day;
(iii) readiness to visit and relive the distress on the Sabbath;
(iv) motives to keep the Lord's day holy.

Then we read a short chapter on how to end the day with the Lord.

What grabbed me
I appreciated the encouragement not to oversleep: 'Thirdly, Being thus prepared to sleep ; you should sleep only so much as the present state of your body requires ; you must not be like the sluggard, to love sleep, Prov. xx. 13 ; neither must you sleep too much : for if you do, that (which being taken in its due measure, is a restorer of vigour and strength to your body, and a quickener of the spirits) will make the spirits dull, the brain sottish, and the whole body inactive and unhealthy. And that which God has ordained for a furtherance, through your sin shall become an enemy to your bodily and spiritual welfare, Prov. vi. 6 — 11.'

Sleep is necessary.  But, like a lot of things, not to be overindulged in.

Next week's reading
Read Chapter 7 (How to walk with God alone).
