Attraction of the cross - Spring - XI - Chapter 12 (The holiness of the cross)

Required reading
The attraction of the cross by Gardiner Spring (Available from Amazon or free here) -
Read Chapter 12 (The holiness of the cross).

My summary
Today Spring teaches us about the holiness of the cross.

We learn that the cross:
(i) confirms and establishes the obligations of the moral law;
(ii) reveals the only motives and only grace by which men become holy;
(iii) secures a sanctifying tendency.

What grabbed me
I appreciated Spring's comment on why many hate the cross: 'These things are too obvious to be questioned; and were they not obvious, wicked men themselves would love the Gospel with all their hearts. Nothing is more characteristic of the Cross than the holy salvation it reveals. It saves not in sin, but from sin. The great reason why a world that lieth in wickedness is so hostile to this method of grace is, that it proclaims so holy a salvation, demands the sacrifice of every idol, and asserts the undiminished prerogatives of the Supreme Lawgiver. '

When we take Christ as saviour, we must also take him as lord.  The problem is, we would rather have sin be our lord.

Next week's reading
Read Chapter 13 (The religion of the cross, in distinction from religions that are false and spurious).
