Required reading
The Journals of George Whitefield (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Whitefield's Preface, 'A short account of God's dealings' and Section I (From my infancy till my being for some time at the university).
My summary
This week we begin reading Whitefield's journals.
Initially Whitefield gives us his reasons for publishing the work.
Then in Section I Whitefield gives us an account of his:
(i) birth;
(ii) infancy;
(iii) boyhood including sinful habits and spiritual insights;
(iv) schooling;
(v) family relations;
(vi) growing spiritual interest;
(vii) higher education;
(viii) contact with the Methodists;
(ix) conversion.
What grabbed me
I'm enjoying this work already.
I particularly liked this comment from Whitefield in the preface: 'Indeed I hoped, that long before now I should have entered into Rest-but I find we are immortal, till our work is done.'
Christians are indeed immortal until God calls us home.
Next week's reading
Read Section II (A brief and summary account of my temptations).
Now it's your turn
