Required reading
The Journals of George Whitefield (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Section III 'From the time of my first leaving the university to go to Gloucester, till the time of my ordination'.
My summary
Now that Whitefield has recovered from his sufferings, we learn of his continued growth in the Lord.
Today we hear about:
(i) the negative attitude of his friends;
(ii) his new friends;
(iii) his study of the Scriptures;
(iv) his witness to relations;
(v) God's supply of his temporal needs;
(vi) his reading habits;
(vii) his witness to prisoners.
What grabbed me
I enjoyed Whitefield's comment on the Scriptures: 'My mind being now more open and enlarged, I began to read the Holy Scriptures upon my knees, laying aside all other books, and praying over, if possible, every line and word. This proved meat indeed, and drink indeed, to my soul. I daily received fresh life, light, and power from above. I got more true knowledge from reading the Book of God in one month, than I could ever have acquired from all the writings of men.'
No book is worth comparing to God's book.
Next week's reading
Read Section IV 'Of my preparation for Holy Orders'.
