Attraction of the cross - Spring - XIV - Chapter 15 (The cross the preservation from final apostasy)

Required reading
The attraction of the cross by Gardiner Spring (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Chapter 15 (The cross the preservation from final apostasy).

My summary
This week Spring shows us how the cross is the preservation from final apostasy.

Firstly Spring establishes that many who profess the religion of Christ will apostatize and perish and that true believers may fall into sin.

Nevertheless, there is no falling away from the cross for true believers.  This is because:
(i) God would not leave his work unfinished;
(ii) the cross has brought new relations;
(iii) the Saviour himself has a chartered right to the final perseverance of believers.

What grabbed me
I liked this quote from Rowland Hill: 'We say of the Cross, what a remarkable man once said of one of its kindred doctrines : "I understand, sir," said a friend, to the late Sir Rowland Hill, "that you hold that terrible doctrine of election.'' "It is a mistake," replied Sir Rowland; "I do not hold election, election holds me." Believers hold the Cross, because the Cross holds them.'

Amen!

Next week's reading
Read Chapter 16 (Full assurance of hope at the cross).
