Journals - Whitefield - VII - A journal from London to Savannah Part I concluded

Required reading
The Journals of George Whitefield (Available from Amazon or free here) - Conclude 'A journal of a voyage from London to Savannah in Georgia'.

My summary
This week Whitefield gives an account of his leaving Deal and arriving at Gibraltar.

A good portion of the reading is concerned with Whitefield's going back and forth between the ship and Deal whilst the ship waited for a fair wind.  Whitefield preaches to many in both locations.

Once they leave Deal, Whitefield speaks of his catechising, prayers and preaching on the ship to passengers and the soldiers.  The journey is reasonably uneventful apart from a large gale that makes most of the passengers sick, except Whitefield.

What grabbed me
I liked this comment on Whitefield's witnessing: 'I was received kindly, visited the sick and catechised the soldiers, some of whom answered most aptly, for which I distributed amongst them all something I knew would be agreeable.  Oh! that I may catch them by a holy guile!  But that power belongeth only unto God.'

Spoken like a true Calvinist.
