Journals - Whitefield - VIII - A journal of a voyage from London to Savannah Part II

Required reading
The Journals of George Whitefield (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read 'A journal of a voyage from London to Savannah in Georgia' Part II.

My summary
Today Whitefield spends some time in Gibraltar and then gives an account of his journey to Savannah.

We hear about his:
(i) preaching;
(ii) letter writing;
(iii) intercession for criminals;
(iv) baptisms, weddings and funerals;
(v) views on denominations;
(vi) visits to the sick;
(vii) food (including dolphins);
(viii) experience of storms at sea;
(ix) teaching of children;
(x) distribution of books.

What grabbed me
I found Whitefield's treatment of misbehaving children a bit concerning: 'Exercised a little discipline this evening on a boy, whom Captain Mackay took notice of above a week ago for behaving ill at church, and said he would deliver him up to me.  I therefore, by the advice of his master, ordered him to be tied till he could say the 51st Psalm, which he repeated tonight very solemnly in the midst of the congregation.  May it be a warning to him for the future.'

I would not encourage Scripture memorisation as a form of punishment.  It should be viewed with delight, not pain.

Next week's reading
Commence 'From his Arrival at Savannah to his Return to London' by reading up to the heading 'On board the Mary, Captain Coc, commander, bound from Charleston to England'.
