Systematic Theology (Vol 2) - Hodge - II - Chapter 1 (Origin of man) concluded

Required reading
Systematic Theology by Charles Hodge (Vol 2) (Available from Amazon or free here) - Conclude Chapter 1 (Origin of man).

My summary
Today Hodge finishes his discussion of the origin of man.

Hodge dismisses claims that man has existed for a period of ten thousand centuries by examining the evidence from:
(i) lake dwellings;
(ii) fossil human remains;
(iii) human bones found deeply buried;
(iv) flint implements;
(v) ancient monuments.

What grabbed me
Although Hodge opposed the view that man is terribly ancient, statements like this are unsettling: 'So long, however, as men of the highest rank as naturalists maintain that science knows of no facts inconsistent with the Scriptural account of the origin of man, the friends of the Bible are under no obligation to depart from the generally received interpretation of the Scriptures on this subject.'

Who gets to decide who is a naturalist of the highest rank?

Next week's reading
Commence Chapter 2 (Nature of man) by reading up to the heading '3. Realism'.
