Whitefield certainly did lots of travelling in this week's reading, and he continued to meet with good reception from most clergy and laity.
What grabbed me
I did like Whitefield's comment on amusements of the world: 'Every minister of Christ ought, with the authority of an apostle, to declare and testify the dreadful snare of the devil, whereby he leads many captive at his will, by the falsely called innocent entertainments of the polite part of the world; for women are as much enslaved to their fashionable diversions, as men are to their bottle and their hounds. Self-pleasing, self-seeking is the ruling principle in both; and therefore, such things are to be spoken against, not only as so many trifling amusements, but as things which shew that the heart is wholly alienated from the life of God. If I may speak from my own, as well as others' experience, as soon as ever the soul is stirred up to seek after God, it cannot away with any such thing, and nothing but what leads towards God can delight it; and therefore, when in company, I love to lay the axe to the root of the tree, shew the necessity of a thorough change of heart, and then all things fall to the ground at once.'
Much 'innocent entertainment' can easily be done away with for more valuable activities.
Next week's reading
Conclude 'From his embarking after the embargo...' by reading up to the heading 'North Carolina'.
