Required reading
The Works (Vol 4) of John Newton (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Sermon XXXV (Opposition to Messiah ruinous).
My summary
This week Newton preaches on: 'Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.' (Psa 2:9)
Firstly Newton considers how the Messiah rules over impenitent and obstinate sinners in the present life by:
(i) sin and misery;
(ii) conscience;
(iii) hardness and blindness.
Secondly Newton considers the unequal contest between the worms of the earth and their maker.
What grabbed me
I liked the point about the conscience: 'I am persuaded there are more than a few of the brave spirits of the present day, who would willingly change conditions with a dog; and be glad to part with their reason, if they could at the same time get rid of the horrors which haunt their consciences.'
A guilty conscience is a terrible weight.
Thankfully, it is a weight that can be lifted by Christ.
Next week's reading
