A view of the covenant of grace - Boston - IV - Head II commenced

Required reading
A view of the covenant of grace by Thomas Boston (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence the First Head by reading up the heading 'II. Christ the surety of the covenant'.

My summary
Today we commence Boston's Second Head about the covenant of grace.

He now teaches us about the making of the covenant of grace.

Boston explains:
(i) how Christ the Son of God became the second Adam;
(ii) how the covenant was made with Christ as the second Adam.

On the last point, Boston tells us that Christ as the second Adam took upon himself a threefold character:
(i) kinsman-redeemer;
(ii) surety;
(iii) priest.

He then unpacks what it means that Christ is our kinsman redeemer.

We'll learn about the other two characteristics next week.

What grabbed me
I liked this comment about why the Son became the second Adam: 'The Father willed and designed, that his own Son, the eternal word, should, for the purpose of mercy towards mankind lost, take on their nature, and become man.  He saw that sacrifice and offering would not answer the case ; the debt was greater than to be paid at that rate; the redemption of souls could not be managed but by a person of infinite dignity: wherefore, having purposed that the darling attribute of mercy should be illustrated in the case of lost mankind, he willed the human nature to be united in time to the divine nature, in the person of the Son.'

The debt we owe could only be paid by the Son.
