A view of the covenant of grace - Boston - V - Head II concluded

Required reading
A view of the covenant of grace by Thomas Boston (Available from Amazon or free here) - Conclude the Second Head.

My summary
Today we continue to learn about how threefold character of Christ in making the covenant of grace.

Last week we heard about Christ as kinsman-redeemer.

Firstly this week we see that Christ is the surety of the covenant of grace.  Boston considers:
(i) for whom Jesus became surety in the covenant;
(ii) for what Jesus became surety in the covenant.

Secondly we see that Christ is the priest of the covenant of grace.  Boston discusses:
(i) the sinfulness of man;
(ii) the sacrifice of Christ;
(iii) the altar the sacrifice was made on;
(iv) Christ as the priest.

Boston concludes the section with inferences from the second head;
(i) what remains for sinners is simply taking hold of God's covenant;
(ii) justifying faith eyes Christ in his priestly office.

What grabbed me
I appreciated this comment: 'If any think this to be an easy way of believing or covenanting, either they mistake it, or try it not.  To believe upon some ground we see in ourselves, is very natural, but to believe merely upon a ground in another, namely righteousness in Christ, and faithfulness in God, while all in ourselves tends to make us despair, is above the reach of nature.  A conscience thoroughly awakened, will convince a sinner, that it is a matter of greatest difficulty.'

Such faith is supernatural!

Next week's reading
Commence the Third Head by reading up to the heading 'Inferences from the conditionary part of the covenant'.
