Required reading
Ante-Nicene Fathers (Vol 5) (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence 'Part II. Dogmatical and historical' by reading the 'Treatise on Christ and Antichrist'.
My summary
Today we read a work on the Christ and the Antichrist, although the Antichrist receives most of the focus.
Hippolytus teaches us that as Christ springs from the tribe of Judah so Antichrist is to spring from the tribe of Dan. He also explains what the anitchrist will do when he arrives.
He quotes (at length!) and expounds prophecies from:
(i) Genesis (Jacob in Genesis 49);
(ii) Jeremiah;
(iii) Isaiah;
(iv) Ezekiel;
(v) Daniel;
(vi) Revelation;
(vii) 2 Thessalonians.
What grabbed me
A lot of Bible reading today and much speculation today on a difficult subject.
But I did enjoy Hippolytus' comments on the prophecy of Israel in Genesis: 'And in saying, "A ruler shall not depart from Judah, nor a leader from his thighs, until he come for whom it is reserved; and he shall be the expectation of the nations," he referred the fulfilment (of that prophecy) to Christ. For He is our expectation. For we expect Him, (and) by faith we behold Him as He comes from heaven with power.'
Christ is our expectation indeed.
