Required reading
Systematic Theology by Charles Hodge (Vol 2) (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence Chapter 7 (Satisfaction of Christ) by reading up to the heading '6 Proof of the doctrine'.
My summary
This week Hodge speaks about the satisfaction of Christ.
Hodge opens the chapter by stating the doctrine with quotes from Lutheran and Reformed confessions.
Then Hodge teaches us his first main point about the intrinsic worth of Christ's satisfaction. Christ's work was of the nature of a satisfaction because it met and answered all the demands of God's law and justice against the sinner.
Next Hodge gives us his second point about the satisfaction rendered to justice of God.
Then Hodge gives us his third point about the work of Christ satisfying the demands of the law.
What grabbed me
Today there were lots of good statements on such an important doctrine.
For example: 'The Scriptures, in representing the gift of Christ as the highest conceivable exhibition of the divine love, do thereby teach, first, that the end to be accomplished was worthy of the sacrifice ; and, secondly, that the sacrifice was necessary to the attainment of the end. If the end could have been otherwise attained there would have been no exhibition of love in the gift of Christ for its accomplishment.'
Do you want to know if God loves you? Look at the cross.
