Required reading
A view of the covenant of grace by Thomas Boston (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence the Sixth Head by reading up to the paragraph beginning 'QUESTION, What is that believing, by which I, a lost sinner, under the curse of the law, may unite with Jesus Christ, and so enter into, and be instated in the covenant of grace, to my eternal salvation?'
My summary
Today Boston moves onto his sixth head, which discusses the way of instating sinners personally and savingly in the covenant of grace.
Boston tells us that sinners are instated in the covenant by faith. In particular:
(i) faith in Jesus Christ;
(ii) faith of the law;
(iii) faith of the gospel.
What grabbed me
I liked Boston's emphasis of belief in the law: 'The faith of the law is not indeed saving faith: for the law is the word and ministration of condemnation, and not of righteousness; as speaking nothing of a Saviour, an atonement, or an imputed righteousness, 2 Corinthians. iii. 9. Nevertheless, it is a necessary antecedent thereof, according to the stated order of the dispensation of the covenant.'
Faith in the law prepares you to embrace the gospel.
