Systematic Theology (Vol 2) - Hodge - XXXVII - Chapter 7 (Satisfaction of Christ) concluded

Required reading
Systematic Theology by Charles Hodge (Vol 2) (Available from Amazon or free here) - Conclude Chapter 7 (Satisfaction of Christ).

My summary
Today Hodge answers objections to the doctrine of the satisfaction of Christ.

Firstly Hodge refutes moral objections which claim that the innocent cannot be guilty and therefore cannot be punished.

Second Hodge answers more popular objections that claim:
(i) there is no vindicatory justice in God;
(ii) there can be no antagonism in God;
(iii) the transfer of guilt or righteousness is impossible;
(iv) expiation is a heathenish idea;
(v) satisfaction to justice is unnecessary.

What grabbed me
I loved Hodge's comment about the foundations of those who raise such objections: 'The only legitimate method of controverting a doctrine which purports to be founded on the Scriptures is the exegetical. If its advocates undertake to show that it is taught in the Bible, its opponents are bound to prove that the Bible, understood agreeably to the recognized laws of interpretation, does not teach it. This method, comparatively speaking, is little relied upon, or resorted to by the adversaries of the Church doctrine concerning the satisfaction of Christ. Their main reliance is on objections of two classes: the one drawn from speculative or philosophical principles ; the other from the sentiments or feelings.'

The Bible must be our foundation for all doctrine!

Next week's reading
Read Chapter 8 (For whom did Christ die).
