Systematic Theology (Vol 2) - Hodge - XXXIX - Chapter 9 (Theories of the atonement) commenced

Required reading
Systematic Theology by Charles Hodge (Vol 2) (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence Chapter 9 (Theories of the atonement) by reading up to the heading '4. The governmental theory'.

My summary
This week we begin a new chapter in which Hodge examines theories of the atonement.

Firstly Hodge briefly outlines the orthodox view which he admits he has already treated in previous readings.

Secondly Hodge speaks about the view that prevailed extensively among the Fathers, namely that the object of redemption was to deliver mankind from bondage to Satan.

Thirdly Hodge examines the moral theory that attributes all the efficacy of Christ's work to the moral effect produced on the hearts of men by his character, teachings and acts.

Fourthly Hodge critiques the governmental theory which proposes that the sufferings and death of Christ were designed as an exhibition of God's displeasure against sin.

What grabbed me
I appreciated this objection from Hodge to the moral theory: 'This theory does not meet the necessities of our condition. We are sinners ; we are guilty as well as polluted. The consciousness of our responsibility to justice, and of the necessity of satisfying its demands, is as undeniable and as indestructible as our consciousness of pollution. Expiation for the one is as much a necessity as sanctification for the other. No form of religion, therefore, which excludes the idea of expiation, or which fails to provide for the removal of guilt in a way which satisfies the reason and conscience, can be suited to our necessities. No such religion has ever prevailed among men, or can by possibility give peace to a burdened conscience. It is because the Lord Jesus Christ is revealed as a propitiation for our sins, as bearing in our stead the penalty which we had incurred, that his blood cleanses us from all sin, and gives that peace which passes all understanding.'

If Christ didn't pay for our sins, the gospel isn't 'good' news.
