Systematic Theology (Vol 2) - Hodge - XLVII - Chapter 14 (Vocation) concluded

Required reading
Systematic Theology by Charles Hodge (Vol 2) (Available from Amazon or free here) -
Conclude Chapter 14 (Vocation).

My summary
This week we close the volume by reading about the history of the doctrine of grace.

Hodge teaches us about the views of the:
(i) Pelagians;
(ii) Semi-Pelagians;
(iii) Scholastics (e.g. Anselm);
(iv) Council of Trent;
(v) Lutherans;
(vi) Arminians;
(vii) Hypothetical universalists;
(viii) Supernaturalists and Rationalists.

What grabbed me
I liked this comment at the end: 'All the topics connected with the great doctrines of sin and grace have been frequently and earnestly debated by the theological writers of our own country. But into these debates no new questions have entered. The principles involved in these controversies are the same as those involved in the earlier conflicts in the Church.'

There is nothing new under the sun.  All new heresies are simply old heresies repackaged.

Next week's reading
Commence
Systematic Theology by Charles Hodge (Vol 3) (Available from Amazon or free here) by starting Chapter 15 and reading up to the heading '3. The Evangelical Doctrine'.
