Systematic Theology (Vol 3) - Hodge - XXIII - Chapter 19 (The law) continued

Required reading
Systematic Theology by Charles Hodge (Vol 3) (Available from Amazon or free here) - Continue Chapter 19 by reading up to the subheading 'Prohibited marriages'.

My summary
This week Hodge continues his work on the seventh commandment by discussing divorce.

He summarises the section himself with the words: 'The questions which call for, at least a brief consideration, under this head are, (1.) What is divorce, and what are its legitimate effects ? (2.) What are the Scriptural grounds of divorce ? (3.) What are the Romish doctrine, and practice on this subject ? (4.) What are the doctrine and practice of Protestant Churches and countries ? (5.) What is the duty of the Church and of its officers in cases where the laws of the state on this subject are in conflict with the law of God ?'

What grabbed me
Nothing particularly groundbreaking here.  Hodge follows the traditional reformed position on the subject.

I did find this comment interesting: 'No state in this Union would dare to legalize adultery or bigamy.'

I wonder what Hodge would say if he knew that one day the Union would legalise same-sex marriage...

Next week's reading
Continue Chapter 19 by reading up to the subheading '12. The eighth commandment'.
