Required readingInquiry Concerning Qualifications for Communion in Vol I of the Works by Jonathan Edwards (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read Section IV, V and VI of Part II.
My summary.
Firstly, today, Edwards asserts that there must not only be doctrinal knowledge of Christianity in true Christians but that there must be proper respect of Christ in their hearts.
Then in Section V Edwards looks at the teachings of Christ to prove who is part of his church. He includes discussion of the parable of the ten virgins and the marriage banquet.
Then Edwards moves to the book of Acts to demonstrate that those who were saved were those who professed faith and repentance.
What grabbed me
I appreciated Edwards' plain speech against Stoddard: 'Mr. Stoddard says. "This person that had not a wedding-garment, was a reprobate; but every one that partakes of the Lord's supper without grace is not a reprobate." I answer, all that will be found in the king's house without grace when the king comes in to see the guests, are doubtless reprobates.'
Grace is everything to us. Without it, we are nothing.
