Dogmatic Theology Vol 1 - Shedd - VIII - Chapter 1 (Revelation and Inspiration) concluded

Required readingDogmatic Theology Vol 1 by William G.T. Shedd (Available from Amazon or free here) - Conclude Chapter 1 Revelation and Inspiration.

My summary
Today Shedd continues speaking about special revelation.

This week he answers objections against the plenary inspiration of the Bible.  People claim that it cannot be inspired because:
(i) there are discrepancies and errors in the history, geography and chronology of the Bible.
(ii) there is a conflict between the Biblical physics and natural science.

Shedd finishes the chapter with the conclusion that the Scriptures are an inspired sum total and are to be referred to God as their author.

What grabbed me

I liked this comment about attempts to rectify Scripture: 'The Bible then is self-rectifying. The book furnishes the materials for its own verification. This is wholly different from rectification from human sources, such as profane literature. When scripture explains or if need be corrects scripture, the divine explains and verifies the divine; inspiration explains inspiration; spiritual things are compared with spiritual, 1 Cor. 2:13. But if scripture requires to be explained and corrected by human authorities, then the divine is rectified by the human. In the first case, the error is only seeming; in the last, it is real.'

The problem is never with the Bible, the problem is with us.

Next week's reading
Read Chapter 2 Authenticity of the Scriptures.
