Dogmatic Theology Vol 2 - Shedd - XXXIX - Chapters 4 The final judgement and 5 Heaven

 Required reading

Dogmatic Theology Vol 2 by William G.T. Shedd (Available from Amazon or here) Read Chapter IV 'The final judgement' and Chapter V 'Heaven'.

My summary
We read two chapters this week.

Firstly we learn about the final judgement, that there is both a private and a public judgement.

Secondly, Shedd teaches us about the heavenly state. It is marked by:
(i) sinless perfection;
(ii) impeccability;
(iii) chiefly mental happiness;
(iv) the personal presence of the Mediator with his redeemed people.

What grabbed me
I loved the comparison of heaven with Eden: 'Eden was uncertain ; heaven is certain. This is the absolute rest into which he enters. There is to be no probation, nor temptation, internal or external.'

There's no falling from heaven!

Next week's reading
Commence Chapter VI 'Hell' by reading up to the paragraph beginning 'The epithet aionios ("everlasting") is of prime importance.' (page 682 of my edition)
