Required reading
Read Notes on the Bible in Vol 2 of the Works by Jonathan Edwards (Available from Amazon or free here) by reading up to 'Prov. iv. 23. “Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.” It is probable here is an allusion to the blood’s issuing from the heart.'
My summary
Today we read Edwards notes on the Psalms.
We hear about
(i) prophecy in the Psalms;
(ii) David's miracles;
(iii) the destroyer;
(iv) sacrifices;
(v) holiness of Christ;
(vi) the resurrection of Christ;
(vii) the thick cloud of Mount Sinai;
(viii) miracles in Egypt;
(ix) forty years in the wilderness;
(x) angels.
What grabbed me
I liked Edwards' comments on the work of angels: 'Psalm xci. 11. “He will give his angels charge concerning thee, and they shall bear thee up in their hands, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.” As a father gives the elder children charge concerning the younger, to lead them and bear them up, and keep them from falling.'
God is most gracious.
Next week's reading
Read Notes on the Bible in Vol 2 of the Works by Jonathan Edwards (Available from Amazon or free here) by reading up to '[242] Isa. vii. 17. “The Lord shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah, even the king of Assyria.'
