The Fundamentals - Torrey - XLVIII- Chapter 6 (At-one-ment by propitiation)

Required reading
The Fundamentals edited by R. A. Torrey (Available from Amazon or free here) -
Read Chapter 6 (At-one-ment by propitiation).

My summary
Today Hague looks at four viewpoints of the atonement.

Firstly Hague outlines the Scriptural view from:
(i) the Old Testament;
(ii) the New Testament;
(iii) Peter;
(iv) John;
(v) Paul.

Secondly we see the views of the atonement from history, such as the:
(i) primitive church;
(ii) Medieval period;
(iii) Reformation era;
(iv) nineteenth century;
(v) period of modernism.

Thirdly Hague gives us the evangelico-ecclesiastical view which is basically the consensus of all the churches.

Fourthly Hague looks at the practical view which clearly shows the power of Christ's death.

What grabbed me
I loved this statement of the importance of the atonement: 'The importance of the subject is obvious. The Atonement is Christianity in epitome. It is the heart of Christianity as a system ; it is the distinguishing mark of the Christian religion. For Christianity is more than a revelation ; it is more than an ethic. Christianity is uniquely a religion of redemption.'

Amen!

Next week's reading
