Required reading
The Journals of George Whitefield (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence 'From his Arrival at Savannah to his Return to London' by reading up to the heading 'On board the Mary, Captain Coc, commander, bound from Charleston to England'.

My summary
This week we learn about Whitefield's time at Savannah , Frederica and Charleston.

We hear about his:
(i) reading prayers;
(ii) expounding God's word;
(iii) catechising;
(iv) visits to the sick;
(v) refusals to give the sacrament and read the Burial Office for unbelievers;
(vi) visits from house to house;
(vii) desires to break language barriers;
(viii) time with Freemasons;
(ix) desires to start an orphan house;
(x) illnesses.

What grabbed me
I was interested in Whitefield's dialogue with a few individuals, including this young man: 'I then asked him, "Whether he believed in Heaven?"  He answered, "Yes."  I then asked, "Whether he believed in a Hell?" and described it by pointing to the fire; he replied, "No," from whence we may easily gather, how natural it is to all mankind to believe there is a place of happiness, because they wish it may be so, and on the contrary, how averse they are to believe in a place of torment, because they wish it may not be so.  But God is true and just, and as surely as the good shall go into everlasting happiness, so the wicked shall go into everlasting punishment.'

Whitefield is right.  The human heart will go to great lengths to ignore the reality of hell.

Next week's reading
