Required reading
Systematic Theology by Charles Hodge (Vol 2) (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence Chapter 5 (The original state of man) by reading up to the heading '5. The doctrine of the Roman Church'.
My summary
This week Hodge begins to teach us about the original state of man.
We learn that the Scriptural doctrine on this subject includes the following particulars, that man was originally created:
(i) in a state of maturity and perfection;
(ii) in the image and likeness of God;
(iii) with dominion over creatures.
What grabbed me
I liked this description of the original state of man: 'His [Man's] reason was subject to God ; his will was subject to his reason ; his affections and appetites to his will ; the body was the obedient organ of the soul. There was neither rebellion of the sensuous part of his nature against the rational, nor was there any disproportion between them needing to be controlled or balanced by ab extra gifts or influence.'
Complete control of oneself - what a wonderful state of being!
