A view of the covenant of grace - Boston - XII - Head III concluded

Required reading
A view of the covenant of grace by Thomas Boston (Available from Amazon or free here) - Conclude the Third Head by reading 'Period III'.

My summary
This week we finish the third head by looking at the third period, from death through eternity.

Firstly Boston teaches us that the promise of eternal life in this period has two great lines:
(i) a promise of victory over death;
(ii) a promise of everlasting life in heaven.

Then Boston gives us some inferences from the promise of eternal life.  All the mercies of the covenant of grace are:
(i) pure mercies, without respect to any worthiness in the receivers;
(ii) of David;
(iii) sure mercies.

Boston finishes by explaining that there was no place for a penalty as part of the covenant of grace.

What grabbed me
I liked the last point about the absence of a penalty in the covenant of grace: 'It is true, the parties contracted for are fallible : but then the performing of the condition of this covenant, as such, doth in no case lie upon them ; Christ having taken it entirely on himself, and accordingly performed it already.'

No penalty is required because Christ will not break the covenant of grace - he is not fallible.

Next week's reading
Commence
the Fourth Head by reading up to the heading 'IV. The nature of the administration of the covenant'.
