Discussions (Vol 2) - Dabney - XIX - Atlanta Assembly and fraternal relations

Required reading
Discussions (Vol 2) by Robert L. Dabney (Available from Amazon or free here) - Read 'Atlanta Assembly and fraternal relations'.

My summary

Today we continue hearing Dabney's view of the broken relationship between Northern and Southern Presbyterian churches.

He continues to charge the Northern assemblies with spiritual despotism and legislating libels against the Southern assemblies.

Dabney also advises against fusion with the North.

What grabbed me
Once again, racism rears its ugly head in Dabney's writing.

Speaking of the prospect of fusion with the Northern churches, he says: 'It means, of course, that we must imitate the church which absorbs us, in the ecclesiastical amalgamation with negroes ; accepting negro presbyters to rule white churches and judge white ladies ; a step which would seal the moral and doctrinal corruption of our church in the South, and be a direct step towards that final perdition of Southern society, domestic amalgamation.'

Sorry, Mr Dabney, in my case, your argument falls on deaf ears.

Next week's reading
Read 'The Pan-Presbyterian Alliance'.
