A view of the covenant of grace - Boston - XV - Head IV continued

Required reading
A view of the covenant of grace by Thomas Boston (Available from Amazon or free here) - Continue the Fourth Head by reading up to the heading 'III. Christ the prophet of the covenant'.

My summary
Today we continue the fourth head with further consideration of the nature of the administration of the covenant of grace.

Boston's second point under this heading is that Christ is the testator of the covenant.

Boston considers the:
(i) making of the testament;
(ii) legatees of the testament (sinners of mankind);
(iii) executor of the testament (Jesus);
(iv) legacies of the testament (righteousness, happiness, the Spirit, good things in this life, unstinged death, everlasting life).

What grabbed me
I loved Boston's description of our stingless death: 'Our Lord Jesus being to encounter death armed with its sting, and that in its full strength given it by the broken law, was perfectly sure of the victory : so making his testament, he left it as a part of his last will, that sinners of Adam's race should be free from the sting of death, through faith in him. A precious legacy, which he could well bequeath, because purchased by his own death ; and which he can and will make effectual, since the fulness of power over death and the grave is in his hand, and he is executor of his own testament. How lamentable is it, that men, knowing they must die, should slight the testament, and the kindness of their best friend, appearing here where none else are capable to help!'

What a wonderful legacy!
