Systematic Theology (Vol 2) - Hodge - XXXVI - Chapter 7 (Satisfaction of Christ) continued

Required reading
Systematic Theology by Charles Hodge (Vol 2) (Available from Amazon or free here) - Continue Chapter 7 (Satisfaction of Christ) by reading up to the heading '7. Objections'.

My summary
This week Hodge continues speaking about the satisfaction of Christ by giving Scriptural proof of his previous assertions.

In today's reading, Hodge demonstrates from Scripture that Christ is our redeemer because we have redemption from:
(i) the penalty of the law;
(ii) the law;
(iii) the power of sin;
(iv) the power of Satan;
(v) all evil.

Hodge also notes that our redemption is shown by:
(i) related doctrines;
(ii) the religious experiences of believers.

What grabbed me
I liked this summary statement: 'It is therefore the plain doctrine of Scripture that, as before said, Christ saves us neither by the mere exercise of power, nor by his doctrine, nor by his example, nor by the moral influence which He exerted, nor by any subjective influence on his people, whether natural or mystical, but as a satisfaction to divine justice, as an expiation for sin and as a ransom from the curse and authority of the law, thus reconciling us to God, by making it consistent with his perfections to exercise mercy toward sinners, and then renewing them after his own image, and finally exalting them to all the dignity, excellence, and blessedness of the sons of God. '

Such marvelous redemption!

Next week's reading
Conclude Chapter 7 (Satisfaction of Christ).
