Misrepresentations Corrected and Truth Vindicated in Vol I of the Works - Edwards - II - Part II commenced

Required reading
Misrepresentations Corrected and Truth Vindicated in Vol I of the Works by Jonathan Edwards (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence Part II by reading Sections I, II, III and IV.

My summary.
Today we continue Edwards' refutation of Mr Williams.

Section I gives a multitude of quotes from Mr Williams that Edwards has no issue with.

Section II outlines the consequences of Mr Williams' teaching.

Section III demonstrates Mr Williams is inconsistent in his statements.

Section IV attacks Mr Williams assertion that the profession of godliness must be in words not of a determinate meaning.

What grabbed me
Edwards was very good at pointing out the inconsistency of Mr Williams: 'Now how palpable is the inconsistence, that we must be obliged to believe men have a qualification in order to our suffering them to come, which yet at the same time we need not believe to be necessary for them to have in order to their coming, but which God requires us to believe to be unnecessary! Or in other words, that God has made it necessary for us to believe or suppose men are truly pious, in order to our lawfully allowing them to take the sacraments, and yet at the same time requires us to believe no such thing as their being pious is necessary in order to their lawfully taking the sacraments!'

We far too often need someone to point out our 'palpable' inconsistencies.

Next week's reading
Continue Part II by reading Sections V, VI and VII.
