I know this club is supposed to be for Reformed classics and so you may be asking the question, 'If this book has only been published in 2009 how can it be a classic already? But the glowing endorsements inside the cover from such people as DA Carson, Iain Murray and JI Packer, who have all written classics of their own, convinced me that this book is set to be a classic. Plus it's free at John Piper's website which fits with one of the other main requirements of including a book in the club - that it should be freely available on the web.
Required reading
Finally alive by John Piper (available from Amazon or free on the internet here)
Thus Piper has written 'Finally alive' to try and correct this damaging mistake and bring great blessing to the church.
I liked Piper's willingness to clearly state hard truths which others would fear to do so: '...the broadly defined evangelical church as a whole in America and the West in general is apparently not very unlike the world. It goes to church on Sunday and has a veneer of religion, but its religion is basically an add-on to the same way of life the world lives, not a transforming power.'
And again later on he says: 'But my conviction is not rosy news for the church. It implies that there are millions of church attenders who are not born again.'
This is why ministers should not stop teaching the gospel Sunday by Sunday. Just because there may not be anyone 'new' in the pews, doesn't mean there aren't non-Christians sitting right in front of you who need to hear that they 'must be born again'.
Next week's reading
Part One which includes Chapters One and Two.
Now it's your turn

Piper's intro. makes me want to read more. It's like a preview of good things to come.
I liked all his questions: the 'why' and the 'how' etc. Jesus doesn't suggest that your life will greatly improve, He ways that 'unless you are born again, you cannot see the kingdom of God'.
I chuckled when I read the illustration of the sore on the ankle, knowing Joel's background in podiatry; but it's so true that if people don't know they have a problem, they can't find the remedy that God has provided.
Sorry this is late. Pastor Piper has been a favorite teacher of mine for years so I was excited to being this book. I must say that after reading the introduction, my excitement has not waned in the least and may have even grown some! I found it interesting that Piper began almost with a “defense” of the doctrine of regeneration against the weak definition according to the Barna surveys. I also was moved by the observation that Jesus did not tell Nicodemus that it was suggested he be born again or encouraged, but rather it was imperative! “You MUST be born again!”
I also loved the example of the doctor delivering the news that the leg would have to be amputated. The remedy can tell more about the situation than bothering to describe the situation. Finally, I enjoyed this quote, “If you know what really happened to you in your new birth, you will treasure God and his Spirit and his Son and his word more highly than you ever have. In this, Christ will be glorified.” This may be the biggest reason that I am looking forward to reading this book.
