Robert Murray M'Cheyne - Bonar - I - Chapter 1 commenced

Required reading
Begin Robert Murray M'Cheyne by Andrew Bonar (Available from Amazon or free here) - Commence Chapter 1 (His youth and preparation for the ministry) and read up to the paragraph beginning 'April 8.-Have found much rest in him who bore all our burdens for us.'

My summary
This week we begin a new biography on M'Cheyne by his good friend Andrew Bonar.

Firstly we are given an account of M'Cheyne's boyhood which demonstrated that he was a scholar from a young age.

Then we read about the death of his older brother and how this was used mightily of God to bring about his conversion.  From this time on M'Cheyne strives after holiness and we are given examples of this from his diary.

What grabbed me
I liked one of M'Cheyne's comments about his use of time: 'After spending an evening too lightly, he writes - "My heart must break off from all these things.  What right have I to steal and abuse my Master's time? "Redeem it," he is crying to me."'

Your time isn't your time, it is your Master's time.  And he expects you to use it well.

Next week's reading
Conclude Chapter 1 (His youth and preparation for the ministry).
